The Metropolitan Stadium of Barranquilla is preparing for a major transformation
The city of Barranquilla is moving forward with one of the most important sports projects in its history: the modernization of the Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium, an iconic venue for Colombian football and home to the Colombian National Team. This ambitious plan aims to transform the stadium into one of the most modern sports venues in Latin America.
The project includes a significant expansion of the stadium’s capacity, which will increase from its current capacity to 60,000 spectators, with new stands and more than 60,000 individual seats that will improve the comfort of the fans.
Furthermore, one of the most important changes will be the removal of the athletic track surrounding the pitch, allowing the stands to be brought closer to the playing field and offering a much closer experience to football, similar to that of the great international stadiums.
The modernization will also include new VIP areas, renovated locker rooms, improvements to medical facilities and public services, as well as the installation of a state-of-the-art pitch. The project also envisions commercial spaces and a stadium museum, with the aim of ensuring the venue has ongoing activity beyond match days.
The renovations, representing an investment of nearly 180 billion pesos, aim to prepare the stadium to host major international sporting events, including continental finals and large-scale concerts. With this upgrade, Barranquilla reaffirms its position as one of Colombia’s leading sporting capitals and the true home of football in the country.
