The Romelio Martínez Stadium takes center stage during the Metropolitano renovation

While the Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium undergoes a major modernization process, another historic venue for Barranquilla football is once again taking center stage in the city: the Romelio Martínez Stadium. This iconic stadium, located in the heart of Barranquilla, is becoming a key alternative for keeping football activity alive while the city’s main stadium is being renovated.

Built in 1935, the Romelio Martínez is one of the most traditional sports venues in the Colombian Caribbean.

For decades it was the home of professional football in Barranquilla and the place where many of the stories that now form part of the city’s sporting identity were born. Before the Metropolitano Stadium opened in 1986, this stadium hosted numerous first division matches and international games.

With the planned renovation of the Metropolitano to expand its capacity and improve the fan experience, the Romelio Martínez stadium is once again gaining relevance as a venue for official matches, sporting events, and football-related activities.

Beyond its temporary function, this stadium represents a symbol of Barranquilla’s footballing legacy. Its history, strategic location, and proximity to the community make it a space where tradition and passion for the sport continue to converge as the city prepares for a new phase in its sports infrastructure.
